8ste WMC nog dit jaar?

Gisterenavond werd het bericht door EMA verspreid dat het volgende World Mahjong Championship van 18 tot 22 oktober 2026 plaats zal vinden in Kunming, in de Chinese provincie Yunnan. Het gebeurde al eerder dat een Europees en een Wereld kampioenschap MCR in hetzelfde jaar vallen, maar we betreuren als Belgian Mahjong Association ten zeerste dat dit pas vier maanden vooraf werd aangekondigd. Hoeveel spelers Europese landen mogen afvaardigen of wanneer we het quotum voor België zullen kennen is nog niet eens duidelijk.

Een andere moeilijkheid is de kwalificatie. In België hanteren we steeds de EMA rangschikking op datum van 31 december van het vorige jaar. Dat wil zeggen dat dezelfde spelers in aanmerking komen als voor het OEMC dat binnen een tiental dagen van start gaat in Uppsala (Zweden). Natuurlijk is het geen evidentie om in minder dan een half jaar tijd twee keer een verre reis te maken en de deelnamekosten te betalen. Het enige positieve is dat in de deelnameprijs van 238 EUR ook vier overnachtingen zijn inbegrepen. Voor meer informatie wordt overigens doorverwezen naar een officiële website die we nog nergens kunnen terugvinden.

Met een hoge waarschijnlijk zullen maar een beperkt aantal Europese spelers in staat zijn om deel te nemen en eerder de meer begoede met veel vrije tijd dan de betere spelers. Zo wordt de mahjong competitie helaas steeds meer een elitaire activiteit voor de happy few, een tendens die we zeker niet willen aanmoedigen. We vragen aan de Europese community om duidelijke signalen te sturen naar de World Mahjong Organization (worldmahjong@hotmail.com).

In the evening of June 23, the EMA announced that the next World Mahjong Championship will take place from October 18 to 22, 2026, in Kunming, in the Chinese province of Yunnan. It has happened before that a European and a World MCR Championship are held in the same year, but as the Belgian Mahjong Association, we deeply regret that this was announced only four months in advance. It is not even clear yet how many players European countries are allowed to send, or when we will know the quota for Belgium.

Another difficulty is the qualification process. In Belgium, we always use the EMA ranking as of December 31 of the previous year. This means that the same players are eligible as for the OEMC starting in Uppsala (Sweden) in about ten days. Naturally, it is not easy to make two long journeys and pay the according participation fees in less than half a year. The only positive aspect is that four nights' accommodation are included in the participation fee of 238 EUR. For more information, however, reference is made to an official website that we have not yet been able to find anywhere.

It is highly likely that only a limited number of European players will be able to participate, and these will be the more affluent with plenty of free time rather than the better players. As a result, the mahjong competition is unfortunately becoming an increasingly elite activity for the privileged few, a trend we certainly do not wish to encourage.
